Housetraining

Your pup will have gotten a head start on potty training while still in our care, but you’ll still have lots of work to do at home. “Keep his world small” is the best advice I can give. Dogs like to keep their den clean. This is what makes house training possible! However, even though YOU see your house as his den, your pup doesn’t. Yet. We highly recommend crate training. It is incredibly helpful for a variety of situations, but house training is the biggest, by far! We begin working on this before your pup goes home with you, so he should already be used to spending time in there without pooping or peeing. But he’s still a puppy. Accidents happen. Once he’s mastered not soiling his kennel, we recommend attaching an exercise or playpen to his kennel. This enlarges his “den” and allows him to master a larger, yet still manageable, area. Once he’s reliably not soiling the kennel or the playpen, you can enlarge his space a little at a time until he eventually understands that your ENTIRE house IS his den, and OUTSIDE is for potty. Also, look into getting a set of potty bells – so helpful!! There is, of course, more that goes into potty training. There are lots of great trainers with helpful information on YouTube. Watch a few! We also recommend the Baxter & Bella podcast. Scroll down to episode #54 – The Puppy Potty Training Triangle. The Baxter & Bella Online Puppy School is a tremendous resource! We highly recommend purchasing their training program. Check your Go Home Kit for a discount code!!
